She looked down the slope in front of them where the forces of Maalon, all bright eyes and shining webbing and blades, massed in their thousands in the hastily constructed camp. Shemda had said that their initial number had been nearly fifty-seven thousand, but Benny could tell that it had now swelled to easily two or three times that. Many of the mountain Hut’ eri had joined the column on the march and hundreds of off-worlders had alighted from swiftly abandoned flitters as they began the descent. It seemed that Maalon’s cause was a popular one, and who could blame them? This was a righteous fight, and all who thought differently needed only to look at the edge of the plain, at the N’a’m’thuli’s border with the rest of Dellah. It was a wall of flesh. Or rather a fence. Not a physical bather as such, but a mental one. Stretching away to the east and west, as far as the eye could see, were hundreds of bodies, young and old, Hut’eri and many others, impaled on spikes and skinned like so many they had seen before. The smell alone was enough to deter any passing traveller. The sight of this fresh bather of death, so incongruous on the lush plains of Dellah, brought tears to her eyes. “How can this be allowed? It’s like something from another age, like nothing that should be on Dellah! I think it’s time this got sorted.’
